The Voices

Three things are owed to every text hosted here: the words in the language they were actually written in, a word-for-word rendering beneath them, and a plainer English beneath that. A reader should always be able to tell which of the three they are reading.

Most of the voices below are owed at least one of the three and have not yet been given it. That is the honest state of this library, and this page prints it rather than hiding it. A missing layer shows as missing. An edition we have not established stays labelled unestablished. Nothing here is filled in by guesswork, and no machine translation is ever placed in the word-for-word row.

Counted from the corpus itself on 2026-08-27: 128 voices, of whom 97 are actual people. The rest are anonymous or collective works, such as the church councils, and reference instruments such as the lexicons.

Held in the language its author wrote in: 67 of 128, up from 1 on the morning of 27 August 2026. Twenty-six fathers now have both their original and an English translation; twenty-eight more writers were added who are held in Greek or Latin with no English on this shelf at all, Origen and Boethius among them. Where a voice still reaches you only through a translator, the row says so.

Forty-three early Christian writers reach a reader, out of forty-seven files in the corpus. The four that do not are not men but collections: the Apocrypha, the Pseudepigrapha, the Apostolic Constitutions and the Ecumenical Councils.

They are served in the Ante-Nicene and the Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers translations edited by Roberts, Donaldson and Philip Schaff between 1885 and 1900, public domain by age. The Greek and Latin these men actually wrote is public domain too, and we do not hold it. That is the largest single gap in this library.

This shelf was repaired on 2026-08-27. Of the 45,037 citations on file, 78.1% used to be a bare reference such as Deut. vi. 4. rather than a sentence a father wrote, because the extractor stored the editors' footnote instead of the prose it was attached to. The father's own sentence was always a few characters away, at the marker in the body. Quoting that instead brought the bare rows down to 337, and the verses showing nothing but a reference from 6,157 down to 42.

A quote that opens with an ellipsis begins mid-sentence. That is marked rather than hidden, so you can tell an excerpt from a whole thought.

66 writers are held here in the language they wrote: 389 works, roughly 13,464,206 words, in Armenian, Greek, Latin and Syriac. This is the first of the three tiers, the words as actually written, and on the morning of 27 August 2026 this library had almost none of it.

Three sources, and each is named here because its licence requires it. The Greek is the Open Greek and Latin project's First1KGreek. The Latin is the Corpus Scriptorum Ecclesiasticorum Latinorum, the Vienna critical edition series, as encoded by the Patristic Text Archive (csel-dev). The Syriac, the Armenian and a further body of Greek come from the Patristic Text Archive of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences, edited by Annette von Stockhausen.

Everything here is CC BY-SA 4.0 or CC BY 4.0, checked in each file's own header rather than taken from a project's front page. Every one of the 180 Latin files was also printed before 1930, so it is public domain by date as well. Where a licence adds share-alike, anything derived from that text carries the same terms; hosting these does not place the rest of this site under them.

Two texts were examined and NOT taken. The Peshitta as edited by the ETCBC is licensed for non-commercial use only, and this site takes payments. Rahlfs' Septuagint of 1935 is still in copyright, whatever a transcription of it declares. A third, Migne's complete Patrologia Latina at Corpus Corporum, is non-commercial and carries no clear chain of title. None of the three is served here.

A work attributed to a father but not written by him is listed under its own name, as Pseudo-John Chrysostom rather than John Chrysostom. Filing a pseudepigraphon under the father's name would be the same error as a misattributed citation.

Read this as a to-do list, worst first.

The originals, still missing for 5 of the fathers. The largest by far is John Chrysostom, who is quoted on more verses here than anyone except Augustine and Tertullian and whose Greek we do not hold; the archives searched carry only works falsely attributed to him. Basil of Caesarea, Gregory of Nyssa, Cyril of Jerusalem and John of Damascus are absent too, as are Leo the Great, Gregory the Great, Novatian and Vincent of Lerins on the Latin side. All of it is public domain somewhere, most of it in Migne. None of it is invented here in the meantime.

The editions. 22 works are hosted without an established printing. They are almost certainly nineteenth-century and public domain, but almost certainly is not a citation.

The prose, now largely fixed. 78.1% of the 45,037 patristic citations used to be a bare reference with no sentence attached, and 6,157 of the 12,013 covered verses had nothing else, because the extraction quoted the editors' footnote rather than the passage it annotated. Rebuilt 2026-08-27 to quote the father's own sentence: 337 bare rows remain, and 42 verses. Those 42 are cases where the footnote really is the only witness.

The volume boundaries. Aphrahat, Ephraim Syrus. The ANF and NPNF volumes each carry several authors, and the extraction split some of them at the wrong point, so rows filed under these names carry Gregory the Great's epistles instead. Verified by reading the rows.

The four that never arrive. Apocrypha, Apocrypha Pseudepigrapha, Apostolic Constitutions, Ecumenical Councils are staged in the corpus but no verse-level citation from them reaches a reader.

The Latin with no English. Cornelius a Lapide is served in his own words with no word-for-word rendering beneath him, which makes him at once the least readable voice here and the closest to the standard all the others should meet.

The two under review. The NET Bible notes are modern and copyrighted, and are not rendered at all pending a decision on their notice.

And absent entirely, though public domain and squarely within reach: the Targums, the Mishnah, and the classical Jewish commentators, Rashi, Ibn Ezra and Ramban. They have no row above because we hold nothing of them yet.

Hosted, edition established means the work is here and we can name the printing.

Hosted, edition unestablished means the work is here, but which printing it is has not been proved from the text, so no edition is claimed for it.

Translation only, original absent means the language the author wrote in is missing.

Held in his own language means the reverse: the original is here, the English is not.

Rows here carry another author's text means the multi-author volume was split at the wrong point and these citations belong to someone else.

Mostly bare references means most of what is on file for him is a footnote pointer rather than a sentence he wrote.

Staged, but no verse citation reaches a reader means it is in the corpus and unreachable from any verse.

Under licence review means modern and copyrighted, and deliberately not rendered.

Open the reader at /bible and any of these will appear beneath a verse they touch.
