The Attributes of God

These describe what belongs to God alone, no creature can possess them even partially:

-- Eternal: "From everlasting to everlasting you are God" (Psalm 90:2). God has no beginning and no end, and is not merely long-lived but exists outside the kind of time that bounds creation.

-- Immutable (unchanging): "I the LORD do not change" (Malachi 3:6); "the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change" (James 1:17). God's character, purposes, and promises do not shift, this is the ground of every promise in Scripture being trustworthy.

-- Omniscient (all-knowing): "Great is our Lord, and abundant in power, his understanding is beyond measure" (Psalm 147:5). "Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O LORD, you know it altogether" (Psalm 139:4).

-- Omnipotent (all-powerful): "I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted" (Job 42:2). Power exercised in perfect alignment with his character, never arbitrary.

-- Omnipresent (everywhere present): "Where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there!" (Psalm 139:7-8).

These describe aspects of God's character that he shares with humanity, made in his image, even though we possess them only as finite, derivative reflections of the infinite original:

-- Holy: "Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of hosts" (Isaiah 6:3, the only attribute in Scripture said three times in a row for emphasis). Holiness names both his utter moral purity and his complete otherness from creation.

-- Love: "God is love" (1 John 4:8), not merely loving as one attribute among others but love as characteristic of his very being, demonstrated concretely, "God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8).

-- Just: "The Rock, his work is perfect, for all his ways are justice. A God of faithfulness and without iniquity, just and upright is he" (Deuteronomy 32:4). God's justice is not opposed to his love, the cross holds both together, sin genuinely punished and sinners genuinely forgiven.

-- Merciful and gracious: "The LORD, the LORD, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness" (Exodus 34:6, God's own self-description to Moses, echoed throughout the rest of Scripture).

-- Faithful: "God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son" (1 Corinthians 1:9). His promises do not fail because his character does not change.

A common error is to elevate one attribute (usually love, or sometimes sovereignty) above the rest and let it override them. Scripture does not present a hierarchy of attributes; it presents one God whose every action expresses his whole character at once. The cross is the clearest single demonstration: God's holiness (sin must be dealt with), justice (sin must be punished), love (he gives his own Son rather than abandon those he loves), and mercy (the punishment falls on the substitute, not the guilty) are not in tension there, they are simultaneously, perfectly satisfied. "Steadfast love and faithfulness meet; righteousness and peace kiss each other" (Psalm 85:10).

The Sanctum treats God's attributes the way Scripture presents them, not a philosopher's abstraction and not a menu to pick a favorite from, but the unified, self-consistent character of the one God who acts in history, culminating in the cross, where every attribute is displayed at once rather than traded off against another.
